A method and control system for controlling an engine 202 and a first electric traction motor 216 of a vehicle, comprising: receiving a signal indicative of a requirement to increase engine speed at least to an engine idle speed (e.g. to start the engine to transition from electric vehicle EV mode to hybrid HEV mode); and controlling the motor 216 to provide positive torque to increase the engine speed towards the engine idle speed. The vehicle may be a through-the-road parallel hybrid with a second electric traction motor 212 providing drive to a different set of wheels. The first motor may be a belt integrated starter generator, an engine accessory drive motor generator or a crankshaft integrated motor generator, e.g. providing traction by boosting output torque of the engine. There may also be a pinion starter motor 206 to start the engine when the target engine speed is below engine idle speed, e.g. approximately 300-1500 rpm.
