Ancillary equipment 404 is mounted to an elongated member 402 after the elongated member is deployed from a vessel (fig2, 250) but before final installation. Deployment may comprise feeding the elongated member from a storage device (fig2, 252) on board the vessel and deploying into water where it is detached from the vessel. The ancillary equipment may then be mounted while the elongated member is in a temporary position, unconnected and at or near the seabed and a support platform may aid mounting. The unconnected end 406 is tied to the seabed or a seabed structure. After ancillary equipment is mounted, the elongated member is installed. A second vessel 410, ROV 420 or AUV may be used to mount the equipment. The equipment may include buoyancy modules, vortex induced vibration strakes and clamps. The elongated member may include a riser, tubular, flexible pipe, umbilical and electric or hydraulic cable.
