A fire extinguishing system, suitable for extinguishing fire in an aircraft compartment, has: a number of air-separation modules (ASM’s) that supply an inert gas from an airflow outlet into an inert gas network; an ozone converter installed upstream of the ASM; a heat exchanger (Cooler 1) connected to the network between the ASM and a fire location; a pair of flow sensors for sensing a differential flow rate across the ASM; a temperature sensor; and a programmable controller 100. The controller is operatively connected with the inert gas supply network to control how the inert gas output is distributed in response to a fire threat signal. Each of the ASM’s has a valve in communication with the controller which automatically operates the ASM and valve to increase the proportion of inert gas in the network; the controller is also adapted to monitor the flow and temperature sensor and add an adjustable quantity of hot air to the ASM’s to improve their performance; the controller also regulates the ASM’s and the heat exchanger, thereby regulating the temperature and pressure of the inert gas supplied to the fire location.
