An aircraft control system 100 comprising a user interface 10 manually operable by a user (e.g. pilot) to manually input first and second requests; a landing gear controller 20 configured to initiate landing gear bay door movement from closed to open position on the basis of receiving a first request input indication (e.g. electrical signal) without initiating movement of the landing gear between extended and retracted positions; and initiate landing gear movement between extended and retracted positions on the basis of receiving a second request input indication. The control system may be operable for input of first and/or second requests only when the aircraft has a positive rate of climb, taken off the ground, exceeded a predetermined groundspeed or angle of rotation. The use interface may be a touchscreen, gesture or voice operable device, or a control lever moved between first, second and third positions (figure 3). The system may enable landing gear retraction occurring sooner after take-off, whilst preventing premature and inadvertent retraction.
