A system for recirculating exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine 2, the system comprising an exhaust conduit 3, a first catalyst 21 disposed in exhaust conduit 3 for treating exhaust gas, an electric heating element 20 for heating air in the exhaust conduit 3 upstream of first catalyst 21, a pumping means for pumping air past the electric heating element 20 to preheat the first catalyst 21, and a recirculation line 14, 24, 38 for recirculating the heated air. The present disclosure also relates to a catalyst preheat control unit 29 and to a method of preheating a first catalyst 21. The system aims overcome the limitations of catalysts having high operating temperatures and that may be preheated.
