A personal water safety device (1, Fig 1) comprises a backpack assembly which comprises a slimline body section 2 and a harness assembly. The harness assembly comprises a left shoulder strap (3, Fig 1), a right shoulder strap 4 and waist straps 5 configured to extend over the wearer's left and right shoulder and extend around the wearer's waist respectively. The slimline body section of the backpack houses a compressed air container (10, Fig 9), an air bladder (12, Fig 9) in fluid communication with the compressed air container, a pull cord 13 coupled to a trigger attachment (11, Fig 9) on the compressed air container, a lanyard (14, Fig 9) permanently attached at one end to the backpack body section and at the other end to the air bladder, a holding cord (15, Fig 9) permanently attached to one end of the air bladder, a waterproof compartment and identification means 17. The backpack body section is elongate in shape and configured to be positioned on the upper back area between the shoulders of the wearer and wherein the backpack body section is neutrally buoyant in water.
