A motor vehicle ignition switch 2 comprises at least one reference connector 36, first second and third connectors 35,37,34 which are different from one another and connect to a processor 5, and a three-contact conductive rotor 57 which is rotatable around a rotation axis 18 in response to a rotation of a key 4 in an ignition lock 3. The rotor may be rotated to selectively assume an “off” position, a “run” position, a “start” position and an intermediate position between the “off” and “run” positions. In the “off” position the key can be inserted/withdrawn from the lock and the reference connector is disconnected from the first, second and third connectors. In the “start” the rotor connects the reference connector with the first and third connectors. In the “run” position, which is arranged angularly between the “off” and “start” positions, the rotor connects the reference connector with the second and third connectors. In the intermediate position the rotor connects the reference connector with the first and second connectors. The switch may comprise a plurality of conductive plates 40-44 and the rotor may comprise a first, second and third sliding contacts 59-61 which contact the plates.
