An adaptive energy management system 100 for an autonomously powered machine (APM) is provided. The system 100 comprises at least one double-acting hydraulic cylinder 104, operatively coupled inline between a floating structure on a sea surface and a payload L. The hydraulic cylinder 104 comprises at least one first working fluid; at least one first hydraulic accumulator 112. Operatively coupled to the hydraulic cylinder 104 via at least one first fluid conduit; a bidirectional energy converter 200, operatively coupled to the hydraulic cylinder 104 and/or the at least one first hydraulic accumulator 112 and selectively actuable between a power take-off (PTO) mode, where at least a portion of the pressure energy is converted into electric energy, and a power take-in (PTI) mode, where electric energy supplied to the bidirectional energy converter 200 is converted into pressure energy. An energy storage system comprises an energy storage 302, configured to store electric energy received from the bidirectional energy converter 200, and supply electric energy to the bidirectional energy converter 200; and an adaptive power control system 300. configured to control at least the bidirectional energy converter 200, so as to maintain a predetermined charge level of the energy storage 302, and/or optimise a proportion between energy recovered from and returned to the at least one working fluid.
