A rescue system 10 for rescuing a mariner at sea, comprises a distress beacon 11 for the mariner, for example in a man overboard situation (MOB). The distress beacon comprises a transmitter (111, figure 1) arranged to transmit a first acoustic signal at a first frequency in water. A receiver 12 receives the transmitted acoustic signal, and activates a controller 13 which launches an autonomous watercraft 14 for rescuing the mariner. Also disclosed is an acoustic transmitter 11 which uses a frequency of between 80 and 400 kHZ. Also disclosed is an autonomous watercraft that comprises a second transmitter (141, figure 1), which emits a second acoustic signal, and may communicate with the distress beacon, and the autonomous watercraft may determine it’s bearing and speed in response to the received signal.
