A rail vehicle body structure (fig.2,1) has an underframe extending the length of the structure for support by bogies (fig.1,2). The underframe includes: longitudinal side sills 11; a longitudinal centre sill 14, located between the side sills; a transverse body bolster 15, intersecting the centre sill; a plate (fig.4,61) interposing between the centre sill and the body bolster at their intersection; a bogie air spring support 16 on the underside of the body bolster; first mechanical fastening regions 56 between the ends of the body bolster and side sills; and a second mechanical fastening region 57,58 between the centre of the body bolster and the centre sill, which overlaps with the air spring support. Counterbores for the heads of the second region mechanical fasteners (fig.4,90) are formed in the bolster, the fasteners arranged in two lines 57,58 both extending across the air spring support. Preferably, the number of fasteners in the first and second lines is the same. Preferably, the sills are made from aluminium alloy and the body bolster and plate are made from steel; the plate may be the same width as, and welded to, the centre sill.
