Disclosed is a method of controlling a vehicle occupant safety device based upon an estimated occupant size and an estimated vehicle seat position Dst. Occupant size is estimated based on occupant weight. Vehicle seat position is estimated based upon the estimated occupant size and a measured occupant position D0. The occupant position measurement is obtained via an acoustic or light sensor 406 (e.g. ultrasonic waves or infrared light sensors). Controlling a safety device may comprise determining a retractor force for a seatbelt. Estimating occupant size may involve determining the estimate based upon two anthropomorphic models, namely adult female and adult male models. These may include a 5th percentile adult female model and a 50th percentile adult male model. Estimating the seat position may include estimating seat track position and seat back angle, and may include determining whether the seat is at a mid-track position. Also disclosed is system with a computer programmed to execute the abovementioned method.
