A seat (12, figure 2) including a device 18 supporting a seatback (16) on a seat bottom (14). The device includes a housing 20 supported on the seat bottom and a rotor 22 supported on the housing. The device includes a helical interface 28 (e.g. threads) between the housing and the rotor. The rotor is moveable relative to the housing along the helical interface. The housing and the rotor define a cavity 24 therebetween, and a resilient material 26 is disposed in the cavity. During a vehicle impact (e.g. rear impact F), the rotor may move relative to the housing and compress the resilient material in the cavity. The resilient material may absorb energy from the vehicle impact and reduce deformation of the seat. The resilient material may be a solid open cell foam or a colloid of hydrophobic nanoporous particles 78 in a liquid 80, such that liquid may enter the nanopores 82 under pressure, compressing the air inside the pores.
