Obstacle detection systems and methods are described. A method receives data from at least one sensor 304, 306, 308 mounted to a vehicle 302 and creates a probabilistic grid-based map (figure 3B) associated with an area near the vehicle 310. An obstacle detection system determines a confidence associated with each probability in the grid-based map and determines a likelihood that an obstacle exists in the area near the vehicle based on the probabilistic grid-based map. There may then be an alert generated for the driver, or an automated driving system. The system may then process the probabilities for the neighboring eight cells. A Bayesian method may be used. LIDAR 304, RADAR 308 and or a camera 306 may be used to sense the obstacles.
