An apparatus capable of digitally representing a privately owned designated area and allocating parking spaces within that area by wirelessly communicating with autonomous vehicles following a request from such a vehicle for a parking space to be allocated. The apparatus can manage requests from multiple vehicles and monitor the movement of autonomous vehicles and other environmental factors within the designated area, controlling the movement of autonomous vehicles within the designated area. Also claimed is a method of performing the above as well as a method of arranging the handover of responsibility of autonomous vehicles to and from the authority responsible for publicly controlled routes adjacent to the designated area.
