An alarm system 105 for a vehicle, such as a bicycle 100, comprises a touch sensor 130 electrically connected to a vehicle frame 110 for outputting an alarm signal based on a proximity of a person to the vehicle, a communication module 135 for receiving signals from a remote device 125, and a controller 155 programmed to selectively enable and disable the sensor 130 in response to signals received from the remote device 155. The touch sensor 130 is electrically connected to a conductive portion of the frame 110 such that it may employ capacitive or resistive sensing techniques (or similar) to determine the proximity of a person. The alarm system 105 may also include a shock sensor 140 configured to detect forces applied to the touch sensor 130 such that should someone attempt to disable the touch sensor 130, e.g. by breaking the touch sensor with a tool such as a hammer, an alert will be triggered.
