The invention concerns providing information and advice to drivers, staff and passengers at boarding areas of public transport, in particular train and metro stations. A vehicle passenger monitoring system comprises an imaging sensor 18 (e.g. a camera) arranged to capture images of a scene including vehicle access points 16 (e.g. doors). An image processor receives the output from the imaging sensor, and has an object detector for determining the presence of discrete objects 14 in the scene based on variation of visual parameters within the captured images. An object identifier/classifier determines an object type for the detected objects, e.g. from a list that includes both animate and inanimate objects. A scene analyzer identifies one or more conditions for the imaged scene based on the object types. A signal generator sends an output including information derived from said condition to a communication system for communication to individuals. The system may be used to generate a passenger information display 22 and/or to monitor and report on adverse conditions such as overcrowding or hazards (e.g. baggage 24A,B).
