A vehicle (104, Fig. 1) comprising a plurality of wheels (102, Fig. 1) each wheel including a pressure sensor (214, Fig. 2) and a wireless transceiver (203, Fig. 2); a central transceiver (112, Fig. 2) configured to obtain tire pressure and signal strength information from each of the wireless transceivers (203, Fig. 2); and a processor (220, Fig. 2) communicatively coupled to the central transceiver (112, Fig. 1) and configured to detect removal of one of the wheels (102, Fig. 1) based on the signal strength information from the wireless transceiver (203, Fig. 2) in the removed wheel (102, Fig. 1). Other embodiments include a telematics unit (not shown) communicatively coupled to the processor (220, Fig. 2) and where the telematics unit is configured to transmit a removal notification to one or more nearby vehicles (110, Fig. 1) located within wireless transmission range of the removed wireless transceiver (112, Fig. 2).
