A device is provided for transporting a payload over a varied terrain. The device comprisestwo wheel clusters comprising two wheels 20 in a planar configuration, and a planar platform 30 configured to accommodate a payload. The platform is configured to rotate relative to the first and second wheel clusters and to operate in any position along a continuum defined between a first position substantially aligned with a first wheel in each of the first and second wheel cluster and a second position substantially aligned with a second wheel in each of the first and second wheel cluster such that the device can steer, ascend and descend steps. It is preferred that the platform will slide between the first and second positions. Ultrasonic sensors or cameras may be incorporated so as to detect the steps, and allow the device to be either fully autonomous or semi-autonomous.
