A method for controlling a skidding vehicle, the method including receiving a request for automated corrective measures to control the skidding 301, formulating a configuration change to at least one vehicle component in response to the request 303 and applying the change to mitigate the skidding 304. The request for automated measures may come from a driver, possibly using a button on a steering wheel, or may be implemented automatically from a skid detection module (232, fig.2); the action of which may be delayed depending on the skid severity, type or duration in order to determine if the driver is able to regain control of the vehicle. Cruise control or lane keeping systems may be used to control the steering angle, braking or acceleration to mitigate an oversteer, understeer or counter-steer skid. Sensors, such as LIDAR, RADAR, acoustic or ultrasound, may be used to perceive the environment surrounding the vehicle in order to aid in determining if a skid is underway.
