A method or system with means to receive, at a host vehicle 100, signals 315 transmitted from a target vehicle305, calculate a Doppler shift associated with the signals transmitted from the target vehicle, and determine whether the target vehicle is moving toward the host vehicle based on the Doppler shift. The target vehicles acceleration or deceleration may be determined based on the Doppler shift. The speed of the target vehicle may be determined using data transmitted by the target vehicle. The Doppler shift may also be calculated when it is determined that the vehicles are on intersecting roads. The Doppler shift may be calculated based on a ratio of the received and transmitted frequencies, the ratio may then be compared to a threshold to determine if there is a collision risk. The aim of this invention is to reduce the risk of collisions at intersections by providing a warning if two vehicles are approaching, but avoiding a false warning if two vehicles are at an intersection but one is leaving.
