Determining whether or not an approaching object 402 is going to collide with a door 403 of a host vehicle 401, once the door 403 is opened. The method comprises: determining that the approaching traffic 402 will pass through the space 406 occupied by the door 403, possible by one of more sensors externally mounted on the vehicle; receiving a classification of the approaching traffic 402 from a neural network; and determining that the door 403 poses a hazard to the approaching traffic 402 based on the classification of the approaching traffic and a configuration of the host vehicle 401. The classification may indicate that the approaching vehicle is a cyclist, skate boarder, wheel chair or a roller skater. The data received from the sensors may be filtered on a heterogeneous computing platform in order to determine that the speed and direction of the approaching vehicle would result in a collision with the door.
