The hoist carriage 10, for use in transporting a patient, has an electric motor 22; a body (fig.1,12); a connector (fig.1,14) attached to the body, for use in attaching a patient sling; and a bogie 16 having a rail engagement element 28, a baseplate 26 connected to the body, and two axles 36a,36b driven by the motor 22 with at least one wheel 38 on each axle 36a,36b, allowing the carriage 10 to travel along rails 18 such that when transitioning between two adjacent rails 18 traction is provided on both rails 18. Preferably the axles 36a,36b are connected by a gear train 40; a carriage control circuit and part of the motor 22 are housed in the body (fig.1,12); the baseplate 26 can be released from a recess 52 in the body, and the rail engagement element 28 has two sections 30,32 with the axles mounted on the first section 30 and further passive or driven follower wheels 48 on axles 46 mounted on the second part 32; the rail engagement element 28 sections may pivot relative to the baseplate 26, and the baseplate 26 may rotate relative to the body (fig.1,12) providing articulation. A hoist system, rail-engagement device and method are also claimed.
