A method is disclosed where a temperature of a vehicle propulsion subsystem is measured. When the temperature exceeds a first threshold at least two countermeasures are actuated, including actuating a vehicle climate control subsystem and opening at least one vehicle window. The countermeasures may further include deactivating the propulsion subsystem. The vehicle hood/bonnet may also be opened and an electric coolant subsystem may circulate coolant when the propulsion system is deactivated. The windows may be opened when a precipitation sensor detects no precipitation and/or an occupant sensor detects that the vehicle is unoccupied. The countermeasures may be actuated in a predetermined sequence where; the climate control is actuated, then the windows are opened, the vehicle is then moved to a safe stopping zone and the propulsion system is deactivated, and then the vehicle hood is opened. A further countermeasure may be actuated when the measured temperature exceeds a second threshold or exceeds the first threshold for a predetermined period of time. The measured temperature may be from a cylinder head or an engine coolant. Also disclosed is a system with computer executable instructions for performing the method.
