A component 30 formed from sheet metal comprises a plurality of openings 2, knots 10 and webs 8, wherein at least three webs meet at each knot and a cross section of the webs includes at least one hardened (13, figure 12) and at least one unhardened area. The hardened area may adjoin the surface of the web and may form two layers on opposite surfaces (13, figure 4). The hardened area is preferably formed by alloying a hardening addition into the sheet metal. The knots and webs may be arranged in a periodic grid. The openings may be closed by means of a non-metallic skin (26, figure 12) that may be formed from a plastics material. A second piece of sheet metal may cover the openings and be supported by the knots and webs. The component may form a spare wheel recess or an outer sheet of a door or a bonnet of a vehicle.
