A method comprising identifying a current state of a vehicle 210-240, determining a maximum deceleration capability of the vehicle and determining a desired deceleration profile to follow the maximum deceleration capability 260 and control the deceleration of the vehicle based at least in part the desired acceleration profile 270. The state of the vehicle, which may be an autonomous platform (ATP), may include data on the brake pads, hydraulic pressure, regenerative braking, vehicle mass or payload, road grade and surface mu or pitch angle of the vehicle. Additionally map and route data may be used as well as communication from a second vehicle (V2V) or road infrastructure (V2I) and an obstacle detection sensor, which may be a LIDAR or SONAR sensor. Discrete data may be sent from individual controllers around the vehicle (17, 18, 19 fig.1) to the autonomous vehicle controller (14 fig.1) for interpolation to generate the profile.
