A wing member (fig. 3, 14b) for an air vehicle (fig. 3, 10), comprising a core section (fig. 5, 20) defining its longitudinal axis and having lower and upper surfaces, where each surface comprises a respective first and second apparatus which can expand outwardly to extend the cross sectional areas of the lower or upper surface. In the extended configurations, the first apparatus forms an effective aerofoil for one direction of movement of the wing, and when the second apparatus is extended it forms an effective aerofoil in a second, opposite direction of movement of the wing. Preferably the first and second apparatus comprise a series of spaced-apart fins along the length of the wing, moved by actuators, or they comprise inflatable aero-structures. Also disclosed is a vehicle comprising a main body (fig. 3, 12) and two fixed wings, (fig. 3, 14a, 14b) and a propulsion device (fig. 3, 16) generating linear thrust, and a control module for generating a control signal to reverse one of the propulsion devices, where one of the wings can alter its cross-sectional area in response to a reversal of thrust direction by a propulsion device.
