A vehicle 216, such as an autonomous battery electric vehicle (e.g. EV, BEV, HEV, PHEV), has a processor programmed to send data off-board, the data identifying vehicle location, route and a desired rating of a charging station 208, 210, 212. In one embodiment, the desired rating is a safety rating which may be based on crime statistics, e.g. car theft or armed robbery, in order to avoid a charging station 208 in an unsafe area 202. In another embodiment, the desired rating is an activity rating, which may be based on proximity of attractions or activities of interest to the user. Data received from a remote server identifies the charging stations, each having a rating that exceeds the desired rating. Indicators for the identified charge stations accessible from the route are displayed. The indicator may be a number of stars, corresponding to the rating of the charging station, e.g. five stars being the highest rating. The desired rating may be adjusted based on the state of charge (SOC) of the vehicle battery, e.g. the desired rating is decreased as the SOC of the battery decreases. Where the vehicle is an autonomous vehicle, it is directed to one of the charge stations having a rating that exceeds the desired rating.
