A raising roof system for a vehicle comprises a frame 12, a raising roof 32 and a raising/lowering mechanism. The raising/lowering mechanism comprises a scissor lift with a pair of cross struts 36, 38 and a linear actuator 50. The scissor lift is interposed between the roof 32 and frame 12, and the frame can be recessed within the roof so that the raising/lowering mechanism is below the roofline and the raising roof can sit substantially flush with the vehicle roof 16 when lowered. The linear actuator 50 is vertically mounted and can be set below the roofline of the vehicle. The linear actuator may be concealed within the accommodation space of the vehicle and can be a telescopic motorised drive. The linear actuator 50 can exert force directly to the roof against gravity lift while the scissor lift acts only to guide movement. The linear actuator 50 acts along the intersection line of scissor lift cross struts 36, 38.
