An apparatus 1 for simulating a parachute experience includes a device 10 which controls the descent of a participant within a pipe 12. The apparatus includes a first portion 1a having one or more passageways down which the device may pass and which are substantially vertical and a second portion 1b wherein the passageways are curved so as to gradually reduce the speed of the device. At least part of the pipe defines a chamber 14. The apparatus includes a valve 15 that can be operated by an actuator to regulate the flow of air into the chamber. The outer periphery of the device is substantially equal to the inner periphery of the pipe such that the device can contact the pipe around substantially the entire inner periphery thereof. The chamber is at least partially located above the device. The, or each, pipe may be supported by a supporting structure 13 and this may include an elevator or stairs for participants to ascend to the top. The apparatus may include a braking device to slow the speed of descent of the device.
