A system 105 is provided for reducing the risk of harm to occupants of a host vehicle 100 during a collision, particularly a side impact collision, and includes a sensor (140, Figure 2) configured to detect an impact vehicle and a processing device (150, Figure 2) programmed to predict an impact zone, define a passenger zone 120, 125, 130, 135 relative to the host vehicle, and generate a control signal to move the impact zone away from the passenger zone, for example by accelerating or decelerating the vehicle. The passenger zone is defined at least in part on a location of at least one occupant inside the host vehicle; preferably an occupant detection system (145, Figure 2) is provided to detect the location of one or more occupants of a driver seat 120, a front passenger seat 125 or rear seats 130, 135.
