An alert generation system for connection to an on-board diagnostic (OBD) port 10 of a motor vehicle comprises detection means 36,38 for detecting that an OBD device is inserted into the OBD port. The detection means is arranged such that when an OBD device is inserted into the OBD port the detection means sends a signal to a processing unit that is connectable to the alert generation system to provide an alert indicative of the use of the OBD port. The detection means may comprise an electrical socket for receiving a pin of an OBD device wherein the detection means are configured to complete an electrical circuit through the electrical socket. The detection means may alternatively comprise a microswitch configured to actuate when an OBD device is inserted or a sensor, such as an optical or passive infrared sensor.
