A device for a turbofan jet engine comprises a core cowl 404 with a conical surface 410 and a plurality of elongate depressions 408 formed in the conical surface 410. Each depression 408 extends from a proximal to a distal end portion of the conical surface 410. Each depression 408 may comprise expansion and compression regions (412, 414 fig 6). The expansion region (412 fig 6) may be upstream of the compression region (414 fig 6). The expansion region (412 fig 6) may be convex and the compression region (414 fig 6) may be concave. The regions may form a continuous contour which may be axially curvilinear. The depressions 408 may be evenly spaced around the conical surface 410 and a transverse section of the cowl 404 may have a sinusoidal perimeter. A method for reducing noise comprises disrupting a shock cell by expanding a first portion by impinging it upon a convex surface of a cowl 404 and compressing a second portion of the shock cell by impinging it upon a concave surface of the cowl 404. A third portion may be passed over the conical surface 410 laterally adjacent to the surfaces. The shock cell may pass through a plurality of channels.
