A system or method for assisting when reversing a trailer (12, fig. 1) with brakes coupled to a vehicle receives an input for the desired curvature of the trailer, and a controller (28, fig. 2) generates a steering command for the vehicle and an actuation command for a brake. Left and right trailer brakes can be braked individually. The vehicle steering can have electric power assistance and be decoupled from the steering wheel for curvature input; or the steering and steering wheel coupled with a steering input device 18 (figs 7 & 8) inputting the desired curvature. The steering command can be based a sensed hitch angle e.g. using a camera. The brakes can be electric or hydraulic; the reversing speed regulated; a jackknife angle calculated; and data from trailer database utilised. Thus a rearward travel distance is reduced for the trailer to achieve a desired curvature.
