A skateboard-like transport machine has a pivoting footplate or deck 1a, the motion of which causes two helical drive shafts 1b, 1c to rotate. Rotation of the drive shafts 1b, 1c is transferred to the wheels by way of a plurality of bevel and spur gears 1e such that pivoting the footplate in a reciprocal fashion drives the wheels. Braking is achieved by tilting the footplate 1a to its furthest extent, which causes push rods (4b, fig 4) to drive callipers (4c, fig 4) into braking engagement with the drive shaft.
