Oscillatory, particularly haptic but also audible, feedback provided through a vehicle steering system, for example to warn of a vehicles departure from its lane, can be controlled using a method involving receiving a request for oscillatory feedback and automatically inhibiting feedback when a value, typically sensed at a torque sensor 32, of the steering torque applied to a steering column 6 exceeds a predetermined, typically vehicle-specific, threshold value; inhibiting feedback may avoid distracting a driver during a manoeuvre. When steering torque is below the threshold, feedback may be provided using a controller 34 of an electric power assisted steering (EPAS) system. Typically feedback is provided to a rack bar 12 through a motor 18, and may have a duration of about 1.6 seconds and a frequency of 26 Hertz, which may provide a torque of about 2 Newton metres and a displacement of rack bar 12 by about 0.09 millimetres.
