An assembly tool 60 for assembling an assembly (6, Figure 1), typically an aft fuselage, is produced by providing at least a portion of a jig frame 62, fixing support plates 65 to the jig frame 62, machining support plates 65 so that a surface of each of the support plates 65 lies in a common plane (130, Figure 13), positioning the jig frame 62 so that the machined surfaces of the support plates 65 contact a supporting surface (138, Figure 14), typically the floor or ground, fixing pickup device mounting plates (140a, 140b, Figure 14) to the jig frame 62; machining the pickup device mounting plates to a predetermined position and orientation, and fixing to the machined surfaces of the mounting plates, a respective pickup device 66, 68, 70, 72 to the machined surfaces of each pickup device mounting plate. Typically the method produces an upper portion of a jig frame, and may be repeated to also produce a lower portion which can be attached to the upper portion.
