A lever 6 for actuating a vehicle release mechanism 4, particularly a parking lock release of an automatic transmission, translates input force applied at an input into output force exerted at an output. The input comprises an input formation, typically a slot 36, engaging a lever extension, typically a flat-tipped screwdriver (82, Figure 4), enhancing a mechanical advantage of the lever. The output comprises an output formation, typically a fixing aperture 46, co-operable with a release element, suitably a Bowden cable 8 of the release mechanism 4. The lever may be a second-class lever with the output between the fulcrum and input. Lever 6 may have a finger grip 34, allowing lever 6 to be lifted to aid insertion of a screwdriver. Suitably, lever 6 may be kinked between slot 36 and aperture 46. Lever 6 is suitably mounted to an under-bonnet engine (10, Figure 1).
