A vehicle speed control system for a vehicle 100 having a plurality of wheels 111, 112, 114, 115 is provided. The vehicle speed control system comprising: means for receiving a user input of a target speed at which the vehicle is intended to travel; and means for commanding application of torque to one or more wheels 111, 112, 114, 115 of the vehicle 100. The system is configured such that when it is required to accelerate the vehicle to achieve the target speed and a wheel slip event is detected, the system is operable temporarily to suspend further acceleration of the vehicle, receive a user input of an increase in target speed during the suspension of further acceleration, and resume acceleration towards the increased target speed when the suspension of further acceleration is lifted.
