A method of manufacturing a sign, such as a vehicle registration plate, comprises the steps of: predetermining the thickness and path of a plurality of sets of lines 3 (also 6-8 figure 2), each set having different line thickness to other sets and each following generally the same path; receiving user input to vary the colour and opacity of the lines within the sets; and producing a design document, such as a computer design file, for manufacture of the registration plate which includes data defining the line path, thickness and, colour and opacity of the said plurality of sets of lines. The path may be located at the edge of the plate or at the edge of a reflective area (figure 10). The lines may have thicknesses which vary with distance from the edge or reflective area. Also disclosed is the computer implementation of the method.
