A method of stopping an engine (10 Fig 1) of a motor vehicle (5 Fig 1) having a manual transmission (11 Fig 1) driveably connected to the engine (10) via a clutch (8 Fig 1) is provided. The engagement state of the clutch (8) is controlled by a clutch pedal (18 Fig 1). An electronic controller (15 Fig 1) is operable to restart the engine (10) whenever a neutral state of the transmission (11) is deselected after the clutch pedal (18) position is sensed to be depressed (D Fig 2). Optionally the electronic controller (15) energises a belt integrated starter-generator to restart the engine (10). An objective of stop start control is to maximise engine off time. The invention seeks to prevent premature engine starting.
