A motor vehicle controller 40 is configured to receive from various sensors information indicative of a speed of wheels 12, 13 of a first or front axle 19, a speed of wheels 14, 15 of a second or rear axle 26 and a terrain such as grass, gravel, sand, snow or rocks. When a first releasable torque transmitting device, typically dog clutch 22, is switched to an engaged condition, the controller 40 is configured, in response to a detected disparity between the speed of wheels 12, 13 of the front axle 19 and rear axle 26, in dependence upon the terrain information to either to automatically cause clutch 22 to be momentarily released and then subsequently re-engaged, or to cause the clutch 22 to be kept in the engaged position. Reference is also made to a motor vehicle control system, a vehicle comprising the invention and a corresponding method. The invention seeks to improve clutch control in four wheel drive vehicles when wheel slippage for example occurs.
