A motor vehicle 15 has an energy storage device such as a battery 12 charged by inductive coupling with a fixed non-contact charging point using a vehicle mounted receiver 25 with secondary winding. A three dimensional positioning mechanism 20 is used to move the receiver 25 so that it is aligned with and close to the primary winding of the transmitter thereby increasing transmission efficiency. The x-, y- and z-direction movement may be effected by a first carriage 22 movable in a longitudinal direction L, a second carriage 23 within the first 22, moveable in a lateral direction T, and a lift mechanism which may be a pivoting arm connected between the secondary coil 25 unit and the second carriage 23. Alternatively, the 3D adjustment may be effected by a rotating turret and pivoting arm. The movement may be guided automatically by sensors 16, which may be inductive sensors within the secondary coil unit 25. Alternatively, the movement may be controlled by the driver, aided by a visual interface and cameras.
