A survey cable scraper system comprises a boat 12 that moves a scraper mechanism along a survey cable 24A (e.g a streamer). According to one aspect of the invention the scraper mechanism includes two or more scraper wheels (310; fig. 3) configured to rotate against the streamer. The wheels may be mounted on compliant arms (312; fig. 3) pressing against the streamer and may be driven by a roller mechanism (306; fig. 3). According to another aspect the cable is deployed in a body of water. The scraping mechanism may include a scraper blade (514; fig. 6) pressed against the streamer by a mechanism that includes a lever (520; fig. 6) to retract it when an obstacle like a cable connector (510; fig. 6) is reached. The scraping mechanism may also comprise two pairs of scraper wheels, one on each side of the streamer, rotating against the streamers direction of motion and being pressed against the streamer by resilient means. A guide means for lifting and guiding the cable into the scraper may also be included.
