A drive apparatus 200 for the propulsion of an HPV comprises a drive-wheel connecting to a bottom-bracket assembly to revolve with it and delivering torque at a location outboard of a bearing supporting the bottom-bracket axle; a motor comprising a rotor; a motor-output wheel which revolves about an axis parallel to and offset from the bottom-bracket axis; a drive-element which couples the motor-output wheel to the drive-wheel to deliver torque from the motor to the drive-wheel; a one-way clutch in the drivetrain between the rotor and the bottom-bracket assembly configured to engage when the rotor is revolving at an engagement speed, and to disengage when the rotor is revolving at a speed less than the engagement speed; and a controller receiving data from one or more sensors and to estimate from a force applied to the bottom-bracket axle by a rider through the cranks 11, wherein the controller uses this information to decide a level of torque that the motor is to apply to the rotor when no propulsion is required.
