A robot 420 for transporting a container 410, has sensors (530,540,550, fig 5B) to sense that the container 410 is loaded and also to sense a change in load distribution or centre of gravity of the container 410 caused by a user 430 pushing or shoving the container 410. The robot 420 determines a direction of movement 440 associated with the change and a controller causes a motor to drive the robot 420 in that direction. Thus, a user 430 is able to initiate movement of the robot 420 by pushing the robot 420 in the direction the robot 420 should move.
