A rotor sail 2 suitable for use as a wind propulsion device on a vessel (1, Fig 1) such as a ship. The rotor sail has a rotational axis 9 and comprises: an elongate cylindrical rotor body 8 having a peripheral wall 10 rotatable about the rotational axis; and a pair of discrete elongate flaps 11a, 11b arranged adjacent the rotor body. Each flap has a respective leading edge 12a, 12b proximate the peripheral wall and substantially parallel to the rotational axis, a respective trailing edge 13a, 13b distal the peripheral wall, a respective aerosurface 14a, 14b interconnecting said leading and trailing edges, and a notional chord line 15a, 15b interconnecting said leading and trailing edges in transverse cross-section. The flaps can be positioned such that their concave aerosurfaces are oppositely and outwardly directed relative to one another and their chord lines are convergent in a direction away from the rotor body. There is also proposed a method of operating the rotor sail on a vessel according to a range of apparent wind directions.
