There is disclosed a mobile autonomous agricultural system (10) comprising a powered mobile unit (12) for carrying agricultural equipment, and configured to move along rows (40) of crops. The powered mobile unit (12) comprises a chassis (13) extending along a longitudinal axis (50) defining an inner zone (16) to receive the row of crops, and an actuator (26) which is moveable between a fully extended position and a fully retracted position to respectively raise or lower the height of the chassis (13) above the ground. At least one distance sensor (30) is disposed on the powered mobile unit (12) and configured output respective distance signals relating to the distance of objects from the respective distance sensor. A controller (20) is configured to receive the distance signals, and to control extension of each of the actuators (26) to control the height of the powered mobile unit (12) based on the distance signals.
