A security document, an inclusion 260 for a security document and authentication methods are disclosed. A document comprises a document substrate having a plurality of inclusions. Each inclusion comprises a substrate 262 and a phosphorescent region 2 emitting visible light. Each inclusion may comprise either a coloured region 4 reflecting light under visible light, and part of the phosphorescent region does not overlap with any coloured region on the same side of the substrate, or a fluorescent region (5, Fig 20) being substantially invisible under visible light and emitting light under ultraviolet light, and part of the phosphorescent region does not overlap with any fluorescent region on the same side of the substrate. A further document comprises a printed region of a geometric shape having a phosphorescent region emitting visible light, and either a coloured region or a fluorescent region, parts which do not overlap with the phosphorescent region. The authentication method comprises illuminating the document with a flash of visible light; after a time predetermined period, capturing an image of the security document; and authenticating the security document based on the appearance of the document in the image. Methods of manufacturing security documents and inclusions are also disclosed.
