A method of determining an upper speed limit 110 over a portion of a route which allows the electric vehicle to reach its destination with a state of charge 106 greater than or equal to a pre-determined value 108, preferably without requiring a charging stop. The upper speed limit may be determined using: route profile data 102; an initial state of charge 104, route distance, and/or energy required to traverse segments of the route, e.g., tractional energy, elevation change energy and/or energy required for a user-set comfort level indicating a vehicle feature setting. If the upper speed limit is determined to be less than a lower journey speed bound level one of the following may be outputted: an amended route to include one or more charging stops; a new route between the first and second locations that doesn’t require a charging stop; an indication that the vehicle requires charging before departing.
