A footwear assembly for use in a virtual reality environment comprising a front platform portion 20 and a rear platform portion 18 the platforms both having an upper surface that support and releasably retaining a front and rear part of the user’s foot respectively. The front and rear platform portions being joined by a transverse hinge 22 so that the platform portions can pivot relative to one another in the longitudinal plane to accommodate flexing of the users foot, in which each platform portion has mounted under a lower surface thereof two drive motors (34 figure 3a), each drive motor driving a continuous belt (32a, 32b figure 3a), the two continuous belts on each platform portion being arranged substantially in parallel, one located to each side of the platform portion. The belts and motors may be mounted to a drive module such that they can be rotated relative to the front and rear platforms.
